Like Buckminster Fuller, you are a trimtab…
Like Buckminster Fuller, you are a trimtab…
Thanks to Jen Grisanti:
Honor yourself a ‘trimtab’….(“small device that is part of the rudder mechanism, which plays a crucial role in controlling the direction of a ship or an airplane”).
This metaphor was originally used by Buckminster Fuller when talking about his own life. Let us be reminded that we too are trimtabs…We each play a critical role in shaping the future of the planet. Let us each keep this in mind as we experience the shifts in consciousness taking place on the planet…When we feel low or depressed about the changes necessary to make the planet a just and sustainable world, let us remind ourselves, that each of us counts…each of us has a contribution to make, each of us is evolving into a powerful multi-dimensional being who can have a significant effect on the unfolding changes…..

Bucky also wrote a book that is still available on Amazon titled “I Seem to be a Verb.” It is described by one reviewer as a lighthearted look at his thought processes and some of the concepts with which he worked. Another reviewer wrote that
“There is no such thing as a bad Buckminster Fuller book. It’s all in this quote . . . “I know that I am not a category. I am not a thing–a noun . . . I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process–an integral function of the universe.”.” (Attributed to James Mason)
Among other things, Bucky Fuller was known for his Dymaxion concepts, simply described as a way of design that encourages synchronicity (another Buckminster Fuller term) of things. One such device was his Dymaxion car, a radical vehicle based on a tensegrity structural design (See Fuller’s paper at http://www.rwgrayprojects.com/rbfnotes/fpapers/tensegrity/tenseg01.html ) that had unusual transportation capabilities for its large size. Particularly innovative to those exploring transportation designs in 1933 was his vehicle’s rear wheel steering. The story goes that once he was driving his vehicle through an intersection when he was stopped by a traffic cop who was alarmed at the looks of the thing and demanded that fuller remove it from the street. Fuller, ever the clown, reached out his hand and put it on the top of the officer’s head, then proceeded to maneuver the Dymaxion vehicle in a 360 degree circle around the officer, in the center of the intersection, without ever removing his hand from the officer’s head. The officer, although impressed, was not amused.

Thanks, Glenn, for this interesting and informative comment. I love that Bucky saw himself as a verb or an ‘evolutionary process’….What a great concept…Aren’t we all ‘evolutionary beings’ right now? And, what a great story about the traffic cop… Sounds like he was gutsy, fun & fascinating as well as brilliant. Thanks again. best, Elaine.
